Why you 'can' meditate!!!

· meditation,meditate

I often hear from clients and friends, "I can't meditate." And in the next breath they talk about how exhausted and stressed they are.

Anyone who knows me, or who has read one or two of my blog posts before will know that I talk ALOT about meditation and that I am the first to say that meditation isn't for everyone. We all need to find what works for us, but if you're willing to try meditation, then you will see the benefits. But please don't tell me you can't meditate. You can breath right? You can focus on something when you need to? Then you can meditate. The inner coach in me wants to ggggrrrrr at you and ask you to delete can't and should from your vocabulary, but that's for another day.

Let's demystify meditation, a little. There is no special position (although for some types of meditation there is). There are no special tools, just you and your breath. You can meditate nearly anywhere. And lastly, the biggie for me, are you listening? You don't have to meditate for hours to get your zen on. The new studies show how much a difference just 10 minutes of meditation a day can do. Feel achievable? If it doesn't. How about trying just 2 minutes to start? On some days I do meditate for longer, because I LOVE meditation and I get great benefits, other than destress. But when I first started, I meditated for just 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week (some days it was a tiny 30 seconds - you know those days). I saw massive benefits in my life and some of you don't need the huge change that I needed, so the benefits will vary for all of you.

So. What is meditation. There are so many different types. But it is basically focus and breath. It isn't about emptying your mind. Is that even possible? Instead, it is about letting the thoughts that will come, to pass by. Don't grab onto them, just let them float like a cloud passing across the sky. And when you do grab one of the thoughts and then remember you are meditating, you come back to your breath or mantra (or whatever it is for you). The more often you meditate, the longer it is in between grabbing onto one of those thoughts.

So can you do this with me? Take a deep breath (one of those that fills your belly and lungs) and breathe out. Do that twice more. Now start breathing normally. Focusing on feeling of your breath coming in through the nose (or mouth). Do that for 30 seconds. Guess what. You've just successfully meditated! Hoorah. The more you practice (as with any other muscle), the more confident you will get. See you can meditate.

However, if some of you are like me and like to feel accountable or be guided in your practice. Then join a class, have a look at the free audio meditations on my page, or check out some you tube videos. Or if you want to take it further, join my Online Meditation. An online meditation community, where I run meditations live via Facebook live. So now there is no excuse, you don't even have to brush your hair, or leave the comfort of your bed to meditate.
