Does your gratitude feel fake?

· Gratitude,intuitive mentor,Kindness

You've been trying the gratitude diary for days or weeks, trying to find things to be thankful for in the hope that it will lead to a happier you. But all you can come up with is your cup of tea or coffee in the morning. Is there something wrong with you?

No. You're not alone. Join the queue of people who have tried the gratitude diary, but have struggled to find three things to be happy for, everyday. It's normal to have difficulty with this one. You are showing your brain a different way to see the world. Some days there may feel like nothing to be grateful for, but the more you persist (even with those small moments), eventually the change will happen. You may not even notice it.

Being happier isn't a moment that happens. Tah dah, here I am, a happier version of me. Your life doesn't change. Just how you see the world. That's a powerful place to be. You brain starts to see the world from a positive bias, rather than it's usual negative bias. Which means you're not immediately going to ......this is sh*t.

For me the gratitude moments don't stop, but they have become deeper and different. An appreciation for what I have, seeing moments with different eyes. I found adding why I was thankful made it feel more authentic. For example: I'm thankful for this cup of coffee, because before this I was feeling like I may not have made it through the day. And today, it feels like a lifesaver.

Try doing the gratitude diary with a friend. Email or message what you're thankful for each day. It can help remind you and you can share your struggles together.

If you're really struggling, I would add a little kindness activity to the day. Start by smiling at a stranger. Authentic smiles are infectious. Take a moment to connect with someone, when you usually wouldn't. How does that feel? Do you get that wonderful feeling of warmth in your heart when they smile back. Isn't that something to be grateful for?
